When it introduced its Mine of the Future program in 2008, Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO) introduced automated machinery, remote operations centres and data analytics into an industry that has a reputation for resisting innovation rather than embracing it. Since then, other miners have looked to improve their operations with similar technological leaps, but their reforms have stopped short of comprehensive.
