US Senators on both sides of the aisle on Wednesday aired grievances over the long controversial biofuels mandate,with Republican lawmakers taking aim at high fuel costs and some Democrats plugging a low-carbon fuel standard instead.The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has long been a hot-button policy,and has come under fresh fi re in recent years after the Trump administration doled out scores of so-named hardship waivers to small refi ners that exempted them from blending mandates if they can show disproportionate impacts.Those waivers were later pulled back by President Joe Biden's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).Under the RFS law,refi ners must blend billions of gallons into the US fuel mix or purchase credits known as renewable identifi cation numbers (RINs) from larger refi ners with blending capabilities.Last December,the EPA scaled back its biofuels blending targets amid a spike in fuel prices and introduced several policy changes,including refusing to grant dozens of requested hardship waivers to refi ners.
