Welch (1997) considered Aleochara tristis Gravenhorst a rare insect, noting its occurrence usually as single specimens or in small numbers and with a predominantly south-eastern distribution in Britain.Historic records cited by Welch (1997) did however include the Welsh Marches,Lancashire and Northern Ireland.Recent reference to the NBN Atlas has revealed only thirty-two modern records for the species which though probably incomplete, are virtually all confined to the southeast of a line extending between the Bristol Channel and The Wash.
