Eye injuries are common, with trauma accounting for nearly half of all presentations to eye casualties in the UK and overseas. Although most are minor and do not cause lasting visual impairment, serious injuries can have significant morbidity. It is therefore important to differentiate between the two cases. Many minor eye injuries, such as corneal abrasions, lid lacerations and some foreign bodies can be managed in the community, whereas others require prompt specialist assessment. This article covers common injuries, with emphasis on the red flag signs of serious trauma, and their initial management.
