With sales of premium and midgrade slowing, some jobbers have been filling their tanks for the two grades to only 20% or so of capacity. But what seemed like a smart cost-cutting move may end up costing more money than was saved. The problem: Some older automatic tank gauges cannot provide what regulators regard as an accurate and valid reading if the tank is less than 50% full. As result, state inspectors in Missouri have started to "red-flag" some marketer tank gauges.
