My infatuation with cities began on a college-vacation visit to Montreal, where I was enchanted by picturesque squares, sleek subway trains and the intoxicating urbaneness all around. Sitting up most of the night in sidewalk cafes along rue St. Denis, I marveled at how different this city felt from the places I had known growing up in Illinois. Montreal showed me that a city could be a place to enjoy in itself, not merely anonymous space that you travel through between home and work or school.
