The special section on Information Theory and its Applications of the IEICE Transactions on Fundamentals of Electronics, Communications and Computer Sciences is devoted to novel theoretical developments and techniques in the field of information theory and its applications. The Editorial Committee of this section has received 36 submissions: 29 papers and 7 letters. Many of the submitted papers were originally presented at SITA2011. The other papers are mainly received from international institutions outside Japan. SITA2011 was held at Ousyuku, Iwate, Japan from November 29 to December 2, 2011. This symposium was the 34th of a series of annual SITA symposiums first conducted in 1978; moreover, this was the first symposium sponsored by the IEICE Research Society of Information Theory and its Applications in cooperation with the Japan Chapter of the IEEE Information Theory Society after the SITA (the Society of Information Theory and its Application) joined the IEICE as a research society.
