Automation systems in a shipboard environment perform tasks across many individual areas. Bridge and navigation systems; propulsion systems; cargo handling systems; access control systems; passenger management systems; communications systems; and general-purpose networks have worked their way onboard ships in varying degrees. Some systems are automated in that the systems may be controlled and monitored remotely in electro-mechanical arrangements. Other systems have computer-based controllers integrated to provide system logic, using software to operate the system functions.
