The initial cell search procedure of a terminal in an asymchronouswideband CDMA(WCDMA)system is dis- cussed. The procedure consists ofthe following stesp(not nec- essarily in this order): chip and framesynchronization; identifi- cation and synchronization of the longscrambling code; and de- termination of the target base stationidentity. Higuchi et al.1 proposed a cell search method for such asystem. We propose a modification of that scheme which offerssubstantial terminal complexity reductions with the same performance.
