Today's construction industry, like so many businesses, is being transformed almost on a daily basis. The era of traditional design, specify, bid and construct is rapidly being updated and enhanced to meet today's time and financial constraints. The role of the architect as the master builder and orches-trator of the design team is being replaced by a team of specialists for almost every step of the design and building process. For example, the "clerk of the works," once the eyes and ears—and, sometimes, the hired gun—of the architect and owner during construction, has been replaced by a specialist, the "construction manager." Terms such as "constructor," "design-build," "fast-track design," "value engineering" and "partnering" are now common and accepted day-to-day terms for the design professions.
