As I read the articles in this issue of our journal, I -was impressed with their quality, yet nevertheless struck by how much work is still needed to improve our knowledge of the women's health issues that the authors identify. To make progress toward this end, cross-cultural comparisons are necessary. Conducting cross-cultural studies is expensive and some argue that such work is inappropriate because cultures are unique. While this is so, we must be able to make comparisons in order to learn about the interaction among biomedical and social variables.
