Singapore-Compliance and enforcement of the 0.5% global sulfur cap, which goes into force in 2020, was a hot topic at a key meeting of the International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee-MEPC 71-which opened Monday. Sulfur regulations in shipping are not a new phenomenon as they already exist in the emission control areas or ECAs. But what makes the IMO 2020 regulation so important is that it is a massive step change in the sulfur cap from 3.5% to 0.5% and will be applied at a global scale.
