Usually, analyses of iron losses are focused on consequences of magnetic flux in in-plane direction. Possible contributions originating from off-plane flux are not determined apart from measurements by means of the rise-of-temperature method. Here we present a first method for direct determination of planar eddy current losses for the case that in-plane flux is linked with penetrating off-plane flux. It is based on the so-called needle method for flux density measurement.
