A NEW GENUS OF ERIOCOCCIDAE (HEM1PTERA: COCCOMORPHA) FOR AN UNUSUAL SPECIES ON LEPTOSPERMUM (MYRTACEAE)

A new genus, Fimbriaticoccus Gullan and Williams gen. n., is erected for the scale insect Ripersia leptospermi Maskell (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Eriococcidae). Fimbriaticoccus leptospermi (Maskell) comb. n. is a rare species, known only from two collections in South Australia and one in New South Wales, and it has unusual morphology. The adult female most closely resembles the adult females of the atypical eriococcid genus Sangicoccus Reyne, and also the mealybug genus Rastrococcus Ferris (Pseudococcidae), with which it has been confused. Redescriptions are provided for the adult female, second-instar female and first-instar nymph of F. leptospermi, and taxonomic illustrations are provided for the adult female and first-instar nymph. Diagnostic notesare provided on the adult male. The morphology and probable relationships of Fimbriaticoccus are discussed. It appears to be host-specific to Leptospermum (Myrtaceac).
