摘要

Orissa extends between 17°49′N to 22°34′N latitudes and 81°27′E to 87°29′E longitudes on the eastern seaboard of India. Out of the 30 civil districts of Orissa, elephants are confined to the hilly rugged terrain of 18 districts, namely: Ma'yurbhanj, Balasore, Kendujhar, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Nayagarh, Boudh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khurdha, Kalhandi, Kandhamala, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam, where human development is slow and tardy. According to the continuity of forest land, the entire elephant habitat of Orissa is divided into the following parts (Swain, 2000), viz.ⅰ) Similipal and adjoining area; ⅱ) Kuldiha and adjoining area; ⅲ) Hadgarh and adjoining area; ⅳ) South Kendujhar and adjoining area; ⅴ) North Kendujhar and adjoining area; ⅵ) Bamra Hills and adjoining area; ⅶ) Sat-Kosia-Baisipalli and adjoining area; ⅷ) Kapilas and adjoining area; ⅸ) Karlapat and adjoining area; ⅹ) Kotgarh and adjoining area; xi) Chandrapur and adjoining area; xii)Bhanjanagar and adjoining area; xiii)Lakhari Valley and adjoining area; and xiv)Mahendragiri and adjoining area.
