Vibration characteristics of contact system have effect on the reliability of switching electrical apparatus, such as electromagnetic relay and contactor, that working in the mechanical environment greatly. According to the typical features of contact system, the non-linear vibration characteristics of a linear beam with cantilever-Hertizian contact boundary conditions were investigated in this paper. The mathematical models of beam structure vibration are presented by forth-order partial differential equation, and the semi-analytic solutions were obtained by using the method of multiple scales. One primary result from this analysis is the amplitude-frequency relation for the various flexural modes. The softening behavior of amplitude-frequency is investigated by varied parameters including, initial contact force, damping coefficient, excited force and mass of contact. Different normal modes of contact system were solved explicitly. The results show that the method is more suitable for nonlinear dynamics analysis of contact system in electromagnetic relay.
