Headaches in children and young people are common, with 70% of school-age children experiencing at least one headache per year (Javawant, 2007). The majority are tension headaches, migraines or occur in association with benign, self-limiting illnesses. In a few cases however, a headache can be due to a sinister cause, such as a brain tumour. Ten brain tumours are diagnosed in children each week in the UK, and detecting them at the earliest possible stage minimises morbidity and mortality.
