Wet oxidation with molecular oxygen at mild conditions(temperature < 200 deg. C, pressure≤2 MPa)is an economicallyattractive pretreatment step for non-biodegradable aqueous wastestreams. In order to overcome the low reactivity of molecular oxygentowards organic molecules at these mild process conditions, aninitiator was used in combination with ferrous ions in the acidicrange. The promoted oxidation of phenol in aqueous solution wasinvestigated in a 4 liters stirred autoclave.
