The National Hydropower Association's first president looks back at 20 tumultuous years in the power business, from the founding of NHA in 1983. I am pleased to share with you my reflections on the years that have intervened since the National Hydropower Association was first formed, and when I had the privilege of serving as its first president. To give you some of my background: At the time of the founding of the National Hydropower Association under the guidance of Lee Goodwin, I was an investment banker with First Boston, facilitating its investment in power projects. Then, in the late 1980s, I founded a company that developed cogeneration projects; we built the first significant cogeneration project in New England at Lowell, Mass. When this company was sold in 1990, I became a fund manager for the Boilermaker Union, where I was responsible for investment of the union's pension funds in power projects. I then returned to investment banking from 1996 to 2000 at Credit Suisse First Boston. I now advise clients on the purchase and financing of generation assets.
