摘要

Operations research and management science (OR/MS) is inherently an applied science. INFORMS (Ref. 1) defines OR as the application of scientific and mathematical methods to the study and analysis of problems involving complex systems. OR is closely related to analytics that transform data into insights for making scientific decisions. In other words, OR is the applications of analysis to problems or to decision-making. Therefore education of OR/MS should be more towards practical applications of analytical methods. This knowledge domain was justified when INFORMS started their Certified Analytics Professional certification program in 2012. The study included work required by current practitioners in the field with skills such as problem framing, data management, approach selection, model building, model deployment and model life cycle management. With these curricula, students can enter into the field as successful professionals. Though PhD programs are aimed at higher levels of theoretical and academic expertise, the under graduate and Master's degree programs can be aimed at developing practitioners with adequate skills. The method of teaching applications in classrooms is to teach case studies. Use of case studies was started in Harvard Business School in 1919. Now, many universities and academics institutions make use of case studies so that students will have the opportunity to apply tools in practice. In many business schools subjects related to OR/MS are taught in other schools and OR/MS becomes a boundary-spanning field. In these institutions, case study-based teachings are not being practiced. The purpose of this study is to review the literature related to specific application of case studies in OR/MS in classroom while providing suggestions based on the author's experience.
