Well-known Swedish pilot and vintage aviation enthusiast Mikael Carlson has revealed his latest project, a replica of a Pfalz D.? fighter from the late World War One period. Fairly unknown today, the D.? was penned by Rudolph Gehringer, chief designer of Pfalz Flugzeugwerke GmbH. In January 1918, the type underwent service trials for the Imperial German Air Service at Adlershof near Berlin. Initially, three different types of rotary engine were tested on the D.? - the 160hp Goebel Go ?, the 145hp Oberursel U.? and the 160hp Siemens-Halske Sh ? 11-cylinder rotary, with the latter being chosen to power production aircraft. An order for 120 was placed, but only about 40 were built.
