Clinical findings associated with incomplete blinking in soft lens wearers

We have investigated a number of clinical signs associated with incomplete blinking among wearers of soft contact lenses. The dehydration characteristics of the superior and inferior half of soft contact lenses were measured after they were worn by a group of subjects classified as incomplete blinkers and a group of control subjects. The incomplete blinking group demonstrated a significant decrease in the hydration level of the inferior half of the soft lenses compared with that in the control subjects. Consistent corneal staining of the inferior cornea was observed in the incomplete blinking group. This group also appears to suffer from a high incidence of adverse symptoms and more frequent lens surface deposits.
