The year 2010 begins the fifth year in my role as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Palliative Medicine; it is the beginning of the thirteenth year of publication after initiation by David Weissman, our founding editor. I am often asked what it is like being editor. I usually say, "It's lots of fun; I get to learn what is happening on the forefront of our field." The interlocutor then usually shakes his or her head in disbelief and says it must be a lot of work. I usually just nod, in a manner I hope looks knowing and grave. The truth is that the number of people helping prepare each issue of JPM is vast. I just get to take credit for all their work! The number of submissions and the list of senior associate editors, associate editors, section editors, and peer reviewers grows as the field grows.
