COVID-19-associated deaths have outnumbered those caused by the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, while shortening U.S. life expectancy by 1.5 years between 2019 and 2020. Although COVID-19-vaccines have been put into play within a record time of <1 year and have proven effective in several phase 3 clinical trials, large-scale analyses of the vaccines' benefits that also include indirect effects (e.g., slower viral spreading) have been scarce. Now, CDC researchers have conducted a retrospective analysis of the effects of COVID-19 vaccination - mainly with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines - on cases and deaths, based on surveillance data from 2558 counties in 48 states between December 2020 and December 2021 (almost 80% of the U.S. population).
