AbstractThe commercial fasciolicides nitroxynil, hexachlorophene and oxyclozanide have the following minimum uncoupling concentrations when tested with rat liver mitochondria by an oxygen electrode assay: 27‐33 μ, 0.6‐0.8 μ and 0.3‐0.4 μM, respectively. The compounds stimulated the rate of oxygen uptake of intact flukes in Warburg flasks 20‐40 over the untreated rate at 10‐100 μ, 1‐10 μM and 0.1‐1 μM, respectively. Apparent death (i.e. lack of movement after 24 h exposure) was caused by 170‐350 μM, 3.5‐7 μm and 3.5‐7 μM, respectively. The approximate correlation between the concentrations necessary to cause uncoupling in isolated mitochondria, stimulation of oxygen uptake by whole flukes, and apparent death, suggest that the fasciolicidal effect of all three compou
