Margins turn around

A surge in crude supply in August has boosted European refining margins after a poor second quarter. The release of strategic crude stocks in the US has freed up more Atlantic basin crude for European refiners, boosting refining margins and encouraging throughput increases. At least 500,000 b/d more west African crude than usual is loading this month to come to European refineries (AGM, 1 August, p2).
