The US dollar is Ecuador's official currency. The Economic Transformation Law of 2000 requires all financial transactions conducted by or through financial institutions to be denominated in US dollars. Decisions 291 and 292 of the Cartagena Accord of 1991 created the Common Regime for Treatment of Foreign Capital, Trademarks, Patents, Licences and Royalties (Regimen Comun de Tratamiento de los Capitales Extranjeros y sobre Marcas, Patentes, Licencias y Regalias). They also authorised royalty payments for foreign investment, remitting net profit or re-exporting capital arising from the sale of shares.
