A scientist from Dutch genomics company KeyGene (Wageningen) claims that deliberate infection of Cavendish bananas with the Race 1 strain of the Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum) can build resistance to the new Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4). Fusarium wilt’s older strain, which is also known as the Panama disease, acts as a resistance activator against the"devastating threat” of TR4, wrote KeyGene’s banana breeder and TR4 specialist Fernando García-Bastidas in the scienti?c journal, PLOS One.
