Ionising radiation. The HSE is carrying out a five-yearly post-implementation review (PIR) of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 to determine whether the legislation is meeting its objectives. The Regulations replaced the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 and implemented the Basic Safety Standards Directive, bringing the UK regime in line with recommendations from the International Commission on Radiological Protection and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The main changes were: a reduction in the eye dose limit and to classification levels; the introduction of a risk-based approach to regulatory control of practices using ionising radiation; a new definition of "outside workers" that widened the scope of the Regulations; a requirement to estimate doses to members of the public; and amendments to the scope of accidental exposures and significant events that require recording and analysis. As part of the review, stakeholders were invited to complete a questionnaire between 25 April and 30 May.
