China's iron ore imports are expected to grow by around 20 percent this year -- a slower rate of growth than the 32.2 percent rise seen in 2005, due to an expected slowdown in steel production this year, according to a senior industry official. Huang Jingan. an advisor to the China Iron & Steel Association, said he does not expect iron ore imports by Chinese steelmakers to rise substantially in the second half of this year compared with the first half. China imported 132.63 million tonnes between January and May. up 21.3 percent year-on-year, according to the latest customs figures. The country imported 275.26 million tonnes of iron ore last year.
