Electric vehicle drives with 800-V technology allow higher charging power and thus shorter charging times compared to systems with lower voltage levels. To enable the technical implementation of an 800-V inverter, Hitachi Astemo has completely redesigned the inverter's insulation structure and developed a compact power module with double-sided cooling and a new mounting technique for heat dissipation with high-voltage insulation. To meet the desire of customers of battery-electric vehicles for short charging times, many car manufacturers are currently developing systems whose high-voltage network is designed for 800 V instead of the 400 V voltage that is standard today. This is because 800 V allows the battery to absorb twice as much power in the same period of time as a 400-V system, which enables high-capacity batteries to be charged quickly. Inverters specifically designed for a voltage of 800 V also contribute to more comfortable acceleration behavior of the vehicle in the drive system, in addition to shorter charging times.
