摘要

RVNs are without a doubt indispensable in veterinary practice. They are multiskilled, highly trained, empathetic and able to flex their skills - from comforting a deeply upset client to managing an unstable anaesthetic; from running urgent blood screens to guiding an anxious new veterinary graduate through their first weeks in practice. However, this is only part of the story. In October 2021 the VN Futures Interim Report found a quarter of RVNs were planning to leave the profession within the next five years. Poor pay, feeling undervalued, untenable client demands and a lack of careerprogression opportunities are just some of the frustrations. At a time when practice teams are continuing to battle the pressures imposed by COVID-19, on top of an already challenging workload, the veterinary sector simply cannot afford - either financially or in terms of welfare (both human and animal) - an exodus of these essential team members, and nor do we believe this is inevitable.
