Tankers still evolving

Tankers may not have a glamorous image - indeed, many outside the industry view them as dangerous, polluting monstrosities - but, as the main means of carrying the lifeblood of modern living around the globe, they perform an essential task. More to the point, because of the IMO's phase-out of single-hull tankers (which should be completed by 2015), the present fleet of crude carriers is possibly the youngest of the specialist ship types in existence apart from recent types such as wind turbine installation vessels.
