Port work may be silenced

The need to control noise is not confined to just the shipboard environment. Legislators in some parts of the world - notably the EU - are keen to put controls and limits on noise emanating from ships in port or passing along coastal waters. The EU-funded SILENV project (Ships oriented Innovative soLutions to reduce Noise and Vibrations), which began in 2009 and is scheduled to conclude at the end of this month, is one such research initiative.
