IMO puts a lid on noise

Assuming that the IMO does indeed adopt the Code on noise levels on board ships, January 2014 should usher in a quieter life for some seafarers. The code would apply to all new vessels over l,600gt. Vessels of more than 10,000gt will have stricter limits applied to some parts of the crews' living quarters. Smaller vessels and existing ships will not be covered by the code. However, the code does state "specific provisions relating to potentially hazardous noise levels, mitigation and personal protective gear contained in the code may be applied to existing ships of 1,600 gross tonnage and above, as far as reasonable and practical, to the satisfaction of the administration".
