Scrubbing pioneers

Considering the potential market for scrubbers could be at least as great as that for ballast-water treatment systems, the number of equipment makers in the market is still in single figures and with little sign of the number increasing in the near future. In fact with Wartsila's acquisition of Hamworthy Krystallon and Alfa Laval's purchase of Aalborg Industries, the number of active players has decreased. Most of those offering products for use on board have come together to form an industry organisation - the Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) - which has eight members. Six of those are European, one Canadian and one US based. Missing from the list is Singapore-based Ecospec.
