ECDIS pioneer Transas has just launched a fuel efficiency monitoring system, Transas Wave, that can be used in standalone mode or combined with ECDIS for added functionality. Wave is intended to be an easy tool for monitoring and recording fuel consumption, presenting consumption per sailed distance clearly and providing online decision support. It acquires information from navigation sensors, flow meter, engine data and emission sensors. This data is used to optimise the vessel's operation through greater engine efficiency, fuel savings and emissions reductions. Even small changes to speed, trim and planned route can generate significant fuel savings. Along with a range of other parameters, these alterations can lead to fuel savings of more than 5, the company claims, thereby providing a quick return on investment for the ship operator.
