Against the backcloth of increasing environmental regulations, and the rising costs as well as emission impacts of hydrocarbon fuel usage, the possibilities for fuel cell technology in commercial marine applications continues to draw resources into research and development. Wartsila's recent decision to scale down its fuel cell development unit pointed to the limited prospects of the technology generating revenue for equipment producers in the medium-term at least. But committed organisations are pressing ahead with a number of research projects in which there is increased emphasis on the practicalities associated with incorporating fuel cell energy in shipboard power systems.
