Since its formation in 2003, Shanghai International Port Group has run Shanghai port under new commercial guidelines. Neil Dekker spoke to the company's president to see how it will resolve pressing capacity and draught concerns through the construction of the huge Yangshan project. The initial cost of Shanghai port's success will be huge. About USD850 million, to be precise. This is the cost for the construction of the first phase of the huge Yangshan project - the largest port development programme in China. It is hoped that this new port will solve Shanghai's pressing capacity and draught problems. In only five years, Shanghai has risen from the world's seventh largest port, to the third. Over this same timeframe, annual container throughput has more than tripled, from 4.21 million TEU to 14.55 million TEU.
