A 'dirty business'?

Containerised traffic handled at ports in the Mercosur region has grown strongly in recent years, but deep-seated problems, such as equipment reliability, labour relations, congestion and a new mayor in town, remain. Alack of container-handling capacity, unreliable equipment, industrial unrest and strikes have marred what has otherwise been a strong trading performance by ports and marine terminals in the Mercosur region. Facilities in the south and southeast of Brazil, especially at Santos, Itajai and Sao Francisco do Sul, have been some of the worst affected and with only temporary solutions, congestion is likely to get worse before improving. Elsewhere, the key terminal in Buenos Aires, at Puerto Nuevo, does not lack space or capacity but, incredibly, faces the threat of being shut down and the operators evicted.
