On a visit to a northern European unit we noticed that a short length of plastic tube had been thrown into each nursery pen used after weaning. To be precise, it was a section of standard alkathene water-pipe about 2 metres long. Its purpose: to be a cheap method of stopping tile pigs from biting tails. And it seemed to be working.
