French herd operator Gilles Miossec puts oats into his sows' feed, stimulates and heat-checks them twice daily with the aid of a boar from the day of weaning onwards and uses a detection-mating area that is specially designed to encourage a rapid return to oestrus. About 70% of his sows are in heat within 4 days of being weaned and many will be inseminated 4 times.
