SOUTH AMERICA IMPORTS FORECAST TO STAY SUBDUED

Global trade, excluding intra-regional flows, grew by 1.5% during the second quarter of 2016 and MDS Transmodal forecasts an annual growth in the region of 2% for the full year, based on the trade data available at the beginning of August. On the East Asia trade lanes, MDST estimates that while the volume of cargo exported from East Asia increased by 2.5% during the second quarter of 2016 compared with a year earlier, the volume of boxes imported to the region remained substantially flat during the period. For the year ahead, however, preliminary forecasts show a low level of growth of approximately 1% for East Asian exports and a growth of more than 2% for the East Asian imports.
