Two-pronged assault

The port of Busan has been in the top five container ports in the world for more than a decade. Nonetheless, since its high point in the 2000 to 2002 period, when it occupied third place, it has slipped down the league and 2006's growth rate of just 1.6% was the slowest in the top 30 (see 'Top slots', CI March 2006, pp79-81). While 2007 has seen much stronger growth - over 11 % up until November with a throughput of 13.4 million TEU envisaged - the experiences of recent years have demonstrated to the Korean Government that much more needs to be done to attract and retain cargo.
