The TT Club is the biggest provider of insurance of its kind in China. Andrew Kemp, the company's regional director for Asia and the Pacific, explains why this market has to be taken seriously. As the Chinese economy grows, and more and more containers flow out of China by the month, we hear some horrendous, though largely anecdotal, stories about the dangers of transporting goods in/out of the country. It is important to be fully aware of the fact that China still lags behind Europe and North America in terms of both health and safety measures and even basic infra- structure, despite the massive amounts of investment put into its roads, utilities, ports etc in recent years. Moreover, cultural differences, particularly in the way business is conducted means that anyone involved in shipping cargo to/from China should tread very carefully.
