Klien Looks To Imbituba

Another unusual port being put forward into the ring as a hub port contender is Imbituba, in the southern state of Santa Catarina. Currently, this small port handles only 20,000TEU a year, but it is one that Richard Klien, the chairman of Santos Brasil (SB) - the largest operator of container terminals in South America -believes has potential. As if to stress this point, SB bought the main container terminal manager in the port, Tecon Imbituba, from Libra Terminals last year. Klien explained: 'Based on mileage, turning deepsea vessels in Imbituba could save on a day's sailing time compared with Rio Grande and Montevideo. By withdrawing one vessel from their slings, carriers will make huge savings by turning in Imbituba.'
