A glimmer of hope

Manufacturers of integral reefer containers may have performed poorly in 2009, when compared with 2007 and 2008, but at least demand did not collapse as it did in the standard dry freight sector. Last year, the global output of reefer boxes only fell by 55%. It would have been between 60% and 65% if it had not been for a surge in production in Q4 09. In the event, a total of 102,000TEU (52,500 units) was delivered, with over 30% entering service in the October/end-December period. It was the smallest production figure since the 100,000TEU manufactured in 2001.
