To date in 2010, the European Union (EU), Russian and Mediterranean banana markets have all been weak. Already, Chiquita's ceo, Fernando Aguirre, has issued a warning that the multi-national's fiscal performance in the first six months of 2010 will be affected by this softness in the trade. He blamed the harshest winter weather in 30 years and depressed economic conditions which have 'affected commerce all over Europe, particularly in the south', for the problems. However, he said that Chiquita expected banana prices to strengthen in comparison to 2009 levels as the year progressed, as a tightening supply situation in Latin America and Asia begin to restore the balance between supply and demand.
