Blighted by recession, North America's containerised trade suffered severe contraction in 2009. However, by the end of the year a recovery was in sight and this momentum has continued in 2010. According to figures published by the JoC's Piers data, US international container trade declined by 11 % in 2009 to just short of 25 million TEU. Maersk Line, MSC and Evergreen remained the top three ocean carriers on US trades but all of them posted much lower liftings than in the previous year. Nonetheless, while MSC managed to gain market share with a 2% growth in overall liftings, both Maersk Line and Evergreen suffered big declines of 12% and 17%, respectively.
