Vietnam's trade with the rest of the world boomed after it was accepted into the World Trade Organization [WTO] in 2007. Unsurprisingly, ocean carriers looked to the nation to help fill their ships and terminal operators rushed to open deep-water facilities for them, with many of the gateways situated 50km downstream of the country's southern city, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), in the Cai Mep area. But cargo volumes have softened since then, particularly to Europe where consumer demand is weak and the eurozone crisis bites deeper into national finances and corporate activities, including investment.
